Signs Your Loved One May Have A Chemical Dependency

Posted on

Chemical dependency means that someone is addicted to a substance that alters their mind. This may include alcohol, illegal drugs, or prescription drugs. When the individual in question begins to have issues at work or home or to have health-related problems because of their addiction, they are likely dependent on it, or addicted. Unfortunately, some people are very good at hiding their addiction or making it seem to be less of an issue than it is. Learning the signs of chemical dependency can help you determine if your loved one may have a problem. Here are some of the signs of chemical dependency.

Changes in Their Mood

One of the first signs that may be noticed when someone becomes an addict is changes in their mood. They may not enjoy activities that they once enjoyed, they may have mood swings, or they may not be as social as they once were. This is because their addiction is taking over their life, and they may prefer to drink, smoke, or snort, rather than the things they once did. And unfortunately, many of these substances can cause a person to experience attitude changes, such as being paranoid or angry, causing the mood swings you may notice.

Needing Money Often

Another sign that your loved one may have chemical dependency issues is constantly needing money. If your loved one has never struggled with money before, and now they suddenly need money for no apparent reason, they may be using their money to buy pills, drugs, or alcohol. Always be on heightened alert if a loved one frequently asks to borrow money for no apparent reason.

Appearance Changes

The last sign that your loved one may have a chemical dependency is appearance changes. Their weight may drastically increase or decrease, depending on what they are addicted to. They may no longer take pride in their appearance, when they loved to look great before. And their skin may break out frequently or their face may look bloated. Paying attention to appearance changes may clue you in to the fact that a loved one is potentially hiding an addiction.

If your loved one exhibits any of these signs, they may have a chemical dependency issue. It is important to note that you can't change someone, nor can you force them into treatment. But, this information may help you be aware of the issue so you can stop enabling them, cut them out of your life, or open their eyes to the fact that their addiction may be more serious than they think.
